Juanita G. Grant passed away at home at the age of 93 on June 27, 2022. She was the daughter of Willie and Cora Grant (Grant’s Grocery) and was born and raised in the Bluefield, WV area. After completing high school, Juanita worked for the Consolidate Bus Company in Bluefield, WV. From there she attended Concord College studying Library Science. After completing college, she traveled to Germany with the USO as a librarian to military families stationed there. She returned home after two years, completed her master’s degree at UNC and worked in the Roanoke Rapids (North Carolina) public school system as a librarian. She was offered a position to work at Carson Newman College in Tennessee as an assistant librarian. Juanita then became an assistant librarian at Judson College in Marion, Alabama before moving to Danville in 1967 to become the library director of Averett College (now University). She retired as the Director of the Library at Averett after 28 years of service to students and staff and was the driving force behind the building of the current Mary B. Blount library. Juanita was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville. She will be remembered as a “can do” person who was always prim and proper and cared deeply about her family and friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents and only sister Virginia Palmer. She is survived by her siblings Wallace Grant, Warrenton, MO; Charlie Grant, Camden, DE; Randle (Rosemary) Grant, Bluefield, WV; niece Lynn (Eddie) Zimmerman, Goodview, VA and many other nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews; dear friends/caregivers Mary Dudley, Beth Collins and Carol Milan. Per Juanita’s wishes there will be no service. Any remembrance can be made to a charity of your choice in her memory.
