Mrs. Joyce Lewis Motley, age 81, went peacefully to her heavenly home on August 7, 2016. Mrs. Motley was born in Danville, Virginia on August 6, 1935, a daughter of the late James Oakley Lewis and Hattie Rush Lewis. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Lewis and sister, Virginia Adcock. She leaves two sisters, June Terry and Barbara Lewis. Mrs. Motley was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Robert “Pete” Motley. She is survived by her daughter; Pam Motley Knight and her husband, Robbie of Crewe, VA; two sons, Rick Motley and his wife, Beverly of Salem, VA, and Sam Motley and his wife, Jeanne of Yorktown, VA; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Prior to retiring in Danville, Mr. and Mrs. Motley spent many years in Newport News, VA, where they raised their children. Until moving into a retirement community in Hampton, VA in 2013, Mrs. Motley attended Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church in Danville, where she served as an elder. She was a wonderful mother, cook, friend and homemaker who simply wanted to love and be loved by those around her. She was also an avid sports fan who loved to watch her favorite basketball team, the UNC Tarheels. A visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel (215 West Main Street, Danville, VA) with the Reverend Paul Johnson and Reverend Chris Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Chatham Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that memorials be directed to Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church, 738 N. Main Street, Danville, VA, 24543. The family offers special thanks to those that loved and cared for Mrs. Motley in recent years.
