John Lee (Jack) Wickre, 87, died March 23, 2014 in a Durham hospital. Born in Norfolk, VA he was the son of Eric and Katherine Wickre. He graduated from RPI (VCU) in 1951 after serving in the US Navy during World War II aboard the Hospital Ship Sanctuary. Jack worked for the Norfolk Juvenile Court as Court Administrator before building and operating Cattail Creek Campground in 1977. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Emporia. Jack was married to Mary Jane Wickre for over 61 years. He enjoyed being with his family and traveling and camping in the mountains. He most recently lived in Wake Assisted Living in Raleigh, NC. Staff and friends remember him as loving and compassionate and always ready to tell them that he "loved them". Survivors include three children Barry Wickre (Martha), Wade Wickre (Barbara), and Glenn Wickre (Kim), six grandchildren, W. Darrick Wickre, Jr. (Megan), Bennett Wickre (Becky), Diana Wickre Rector (Travis), David Wickre, Mary Katherine Wickre, Farley Wickre, a great granddaughter, Bayla and a great grandson Sawyer; his sister Betty and brother-in-law, Dr. Edwin J. Harvie, Jr. and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. There will be a gathering Saturday at Townes Funeral Home from 10:30-11:30 a.m. followed by a graveside service by Dr. Walter Laseter at Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, VA at 12:00 p.m.
