John Calvin Whitt, Sr., 74, of 611 Brightwell Dr. Danville, VA, passed away early Thursday morning, August 15th 2013. John was born June 22nd 1939 in Washington County, VA, son of the late J. Roy Whitt and Helen McNew Whitt. He had been in declining health for 22 years due to Parkinson's disease. John was instrumental in starting the Danville/Pittsylvania County Parkinson's support group. John served in the United States Air Force and Naval Air Reserve. He retired from the United States Treasury Department. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bessie Ruth Lewis; daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Whitt Tanner and husband, Steve, Portsmouth VA; son, John Calvin Whitt, Jr., Danville, VA; two grandchildren, Tyler Tanner and Brooke Tanner; brother William Henry Whitt and wife Judy, King George, VA; sister Janice Whitt Bickford, Danville, VA. John was a member of the Roman Eagle Lodge No. 122 and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30pm Friday, August 16th and other times at the residence. The funeral will be held at Townes Funeral Home Saturday, August 17th at 2:00pm. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
