John Meyer

Dr. John Theodore Meyer, Danville, VA, died Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was born July 31, 1931, in Lisbon, Iowa to the late William F. Meyer and Anna Hagan Meyer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Frances Jean Lovell Meyer. He is survived by his daughters Judith M. Greenwald and husband Lee of Columbia, MD, Beth M. Mitchell and husband, Kent of Gainesville, VA; His sons, John P. Meyer and wife Amy, Frank L. Meyer and wife Neal of Danville, Timothy A. Meyer and wife Stephanie, Steven F. Meyer and wife Katherine, of Raleigh, NC and Christopher G. Meyer and wife Michelle of Wake Forest, NC. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren; Erica, Jill, Sarah Beth, Caroline, John, Christopher, Mark, Julia, Taylor, Annalee, Cooper, Andrew, Patrick, Hagan, Jacob, John Frederic, William Paul, Savannah, Logan and Lily. John is survived by his identical twin and best friend, William F. Meyer, and sisters, Margaret Polglase and Rosalie Bean. He was predeceased by sisters, Marie Pryor and Marcia Meyer. John grew up in Blackstone, VA on his family farm. He graduated from Blackstone High School. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Wisconsin, attended Virginia Polytechnic and State University, and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving as First Lieutenant, supporting the First Infantry Division in Butzbach, Germany.  John and Jean moved to Danville in 1960 where he began practicing veterinary medicine with his brother, at Meyer Animal Hospital (1960-1965); and from 1965 until April, 2002 he owned and practiced veterinary medicine at Westover Animal Hospital. He was a member,  former member and volunteer of many civic, professional, and scientific associations, including,  Phi Sigma Society for the Promotion of Research in Biological Sciences, Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemical Fraternity and Alpha Psi Fraternity, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Central Carolina Veterinary Association, the Danville Veterinary Medical Association, the Jaycees, Host Lions Club (President 1970-1971), the Sight Conservation Committee (bringing the "first eyes" to Danville in 1965), Junior Deacon and member of the Senior Board of Deacons of First Baptist Church where he was a member until his death. John lived a Christ-centered life always surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother and sons and many family beach trips. John and Jean loved entertaining and spending time with their children and grandchildren. The Funeral service will be conducted at First Baptist Church on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. A private interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, February 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Meyer family wishes to thank Mrs. Patricia Poole and her associates for their supporting care of Dr. Meyer throughout the past several years.             Respectfully, memorial donations may be directed to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 871 Main St., Danville, VA  24541 or the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Meyer family.
