John Jones

Mr. John "Lenwood" Jones, age 75 of 135 Sutherlin Avenue died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past year. He was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on April 8, 1940, a son of the late John Robertson Jones and Annie Elder Jones. Mr. Jones was of the Methodist faith and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was an avid gun collector, a fan of NASCAR, baseball, and especially the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Jones was retired as an elevator installer and was a member of the International Union of Elevator Contractors. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a son, Mike R. Jones who died in 2009. Surviving are his wife of the home; Mary Horton Jones, one son, John L. Jones, Jr. and his wife Heather of Troy, NC, two daughters, Marietta B. Sanford and her husband Joe of Danville, Madalyn B. Mohamed and her husband Ash of Danville, three sisters, Nancy Stockner of Hickory, NC, Jeanne Pittman of Reidsville, NC and Betty Stephenson of Columbia, SC. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Will Sanford and Andrew Martin, one great-grandson, Aaron Martin. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. from the Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend John Meadows, Pastor at Central Boulevard Church of God officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors to be presented by the American Legion Post #29 and the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 7 to 8:30 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 135 Sutherlin Avenue. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Jones family.
