John Hill Hawkins of Danville, VA passed away peacefully on 23 May 2018 in Danville, VA. Mr. Hawkins was born in 1926 in Schoolfield, VA to Otelia and John Hawkins Sr. He is survived by his wife Irene Darrell Fuquay Hawkins, daughter Sheila Hawkins Seiling (Bruce) of Allison Park, PA., and son John A. Hawkins (Beth) of Fort Collins, CO. Mr. Hawkins had 3 grandchildren: Col. Brett Seiling, Derek Seiling, and Major Trevor Seiling, and 4 great grandchildren: Scott, Sarah, Ava, and Emy. Mr. Hawkins was a WWII veteran, volunteering at 17 years-old in 1944 to serve in the Navy Armed Guard. He was in the American (Atlantic) and Asiatic-Pacific campaigns, on the USS John Cropper and USS Duxbury Bay. He had a long and distinguish career in the purchasing department of Dan River Mills. He spent many years as a Boy Scout Leader of Troup 374 and was an active member of the VFW. Mr. Hawkins sang Tenor with the Barbershop Harmony Society. After retiring, he loved gardening, collected and repaired clocks, and taught Sunday School. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Melvin J. Hawkins, Mildred L. Hawkins, Genevieve Hawkins Carr, Jacqueline Hawkins Beasley and Dorothy Hawkins Jordan. He is survived by his sister: Edna Hawkins Newton of Lynchburg, VA . Mr. Hawkins was a great story teller as well as a kind and giving person. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am, Thursday May 31 at St Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3090 North Main St, Danville, VA, with the Reverend Susan Hannah officiating.
