John Powell Boswell, 81, of 267 Howeland Circle, passed away Tuesday, October 6th, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born the youngest son of Lincoln and Essie Boswell on January 4, 1934, John lived in Chatham, Virginia for much of his life. He graduated from Chatham High School in 1951 and married his beloved wife, Patsy Riley Boswell, on June 19, 1960. He proudly served his country in the Virginia National Guard and the U.S. Army. John worked in the grocery business for over 50 years and retired from Old Dutch Supermarket in 2012. After retirement, he volunteered his time at God's Storehouse and enjoyed frequent card games with friends at Abingdon Place of Danville. John was an eternally cheerful and gregarious man who made friends wherever he went and was an active member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Boswell Beller, and his wife, Patsy. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Sammy Tucker, of Danville, three granddaughters, Katelyn, of Christiansburg, Ashlyn, of Danville, and Erin, of Lynchburg, his lifelong best friends and brothers Roger Boswell, of Danville, and Julian Boswell, of Durham, N.C., his sweetheart, Doris Turner, of Danville, special caregiver Patricia Farmer, and a host of treasured friends. A celebration of John's life and faith will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 10, 2015, at Townes Memorial Chapel with Reverend Sandra Bottoms and Reverend Lisa Nordan officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Townes Memorial Chapel from 12:30 to 1:45 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2015, and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church or God's Storehouse.
