Priscilla Joan Battermann VanOsten, age 67, of 114 Vine Circle, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a swift yet courageous battle with cancer. Joan was born in Danville, VA on July 3, 1946. She was the only child of the late Clinton "Dick" Battermann and Alise Davis Battermann. She was married to Dale VanOsten, Jr. on April 27, 1968. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1964 and attended business classes at V.P.I. Extension in Danville. From high school until 1971 she worked for Thalhimer's Department store, starting in sales and rising to Executive Secretary to the Credit Manager. In later years she was a substitute teacher for Pittsylvania County schools and with her husband was Co-owner/Operator of Parkview Marathon/Citgo Service Center on West Main Street until their retirement in September of 2010. Joan was a member of Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Danville Elk's Lodge and in 2009 she made local history by being elected as the local chapter's first female Exalted Ruler, serving two consecutive terms. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, knitting, cross-stitching and dancing. She is survived by her husband of the residence; two daughters, Holly Powell and her husband Billy of Sutherlin and Amy Cummings and her husband John of Boones Mill, and two granddaughters, Skylar and Kristen Powell. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Townes Funeral Home from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and at other times will be at the residence, 114 Vine Circle. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 483 Mountain Hill Road, Ringgold, with the Reverend Doctor Robert H. Ramey officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
