James R. Melton, Sr., 86, of 302 Cumberland Drive, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born August 29, 1926, in Schoolfield, VA, a son of Jess R. Melton and Polly Carter Melton. He graduated from Schoolfield High School and was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy. He was in the plumbing business for 67 years and was employed with Dameron Plumbing for a number of years and later owned and operated Melton Plumbing and Heating until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion. He was married to Rachel Shelton Melton who predeceased him in 1997. He was also predeceased by four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by two sons, James R. Melton, Jr. and his wife Katie of Cary, NC and John R. Melton of Danville; a sister, Jean M. Swicegood of Danville; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Carter of Danville; and three grandchildren, Maggie, Ethan and Claire. Graveside services will be held, with Full Military Honors by American Legion Dan River Post 1097, on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM from Highland Burial Park with Chaplain George Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, Thursday, March 14, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of his sister, Jean M. Swicegood, 240 Lady Astor Place, 11B. The family suggests that memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060, or to a charity of your choice.
