James Louis Davis, Jr., age 81, passed away at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Virginia on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. He was born in Whitley County, Kentucky on May 29, 1933 to the late James L. Davis, Sr. and Elsie Walker Davis. He was a graduate of Williamsburg (Kentucky) High School, Cumberland College, Union College, George Peabody College for Teachers, and Eastern Kentucky University. A career educator, Davis was a teacher, coach and principal at Williamsburg High School (1956-1969), Associate Professor of Education and Director of Secondary Student Teaching at Cumberland College (1969-1991), and a principal and instructor in the Whitley County school system (1991-1998). He also was elected to two 4-years terms on the Williamsburg Board of Education and served a two-year stint as Chairman of the Republican Party of Whitley County. A Christian, Davis was a longtime member of Main Street Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Kentucky, where he served as a deacon and in numerous other capacities. He currently was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Danville, Virginia, where his son serves as pastor. In retirement, he resided for four years in Clermont, Florida before moving to Danville, where he lived for the past six years. In addition to his parents, Davis was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Davis Owens. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Cordell Davis, of Danville; one son, Dr. Danny Davis and his wife Sandy, of Danville; one grandson, Jordan Davis and his wife Melinda, of Washington, D.C., and one great granddaughter, Ella Paige Davis. Additional survivors include a sister-in-law, Betty Cordell Chambers and husband Donnie of West Chester, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Otis Cordell, and wife Jo Florence, of Ft. Myers, Florida; five nephews, one niece, and several cousins. The family will receive friends at 128 Dovie Court in Danville on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. from the Croley Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Ky. Interment will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery in Williamsburg, Ky. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 P.M. on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Davis family.
