James D. “Jim” Carr passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2016. He was born in Danville, VA on February 19, 1925 to the late John Wesley Carr and Lilly Bennett Carr. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Genevieve Hawkins Carr, his second wife, Helen Traynham Carr, whom he enjoyed several years of retirement with until her untimely death, an older brother John Carr, who was killed in the Pacific Theater in World War II, and a sister, Rosemary Coleman. He is survived by a son, James D. “David” Carr of Suffolk, VA. Jim graduated from George Washington High School and worked while attending high school to supplement the income of his widowed mother. Upon graduation he worked briefly for Dan River Mills and then for Virginia Tobacco Company (a division of Universal Leaf) where he retired as vice-president and general manager. He was a lifelong and devoted member of Keen Street Baptist Church and United Baptist Church. Those who new Jim were aware that he was always there to help and advise them. He was a great father to his son, David . Graveside services will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 11 am in Danville Memorial Gardens with Dr. Adam Woods officiating.
