Jackie Hardy

May 18, 1946 — October 28, 2017

Jackie Norman Hardy, 71, of 2721 Golf Club Road, Danville, Va., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 18, 1946, in Danville, the son of the late Norman Linwood Hardy and the late Estelle Davis Hardy.  He was also predeceased by his son, Keith Anderson Hardy.  He is survived by his wife, Margaret Oakes Hardy; son, Kevin Bryan Hardy and wife, Casey; sister, Sue H. Pace and husband, Bobby; brother, Vic Hardy and wife, Nell; and other loving family and friends. After graduating from Virginia Tech, Mr. Hardy taught for 40 years at Tunstall High School.  He began his teaching career as a math and physics teacher but later taught all science classes because he liked all of the innovative and creative things that he could do in class. He especially loved teaching at the Piedmont Summer Regional Governor’s School for ten years. Mr. Hardy had various other duties at Tunstall and coaching volleyball was closest to his heart, having done so for 28 years.  His love of the game led him to coach internationally with People to People Sports Ambassadors for 10 years. Jackie was a vibrant member of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church family.  He was a dedicated volunteer who served as deacon, choir member and for twenty-eight years as the teacher of the Good News Class, now known as the Jackie Hardy class.  A long-time dream was realized when he headed the committee chosen to oversee the building of the MHBC Family Life Center. Mr. Hardy was an avid golfer.  He loved to play the game especially with his brother, sons, nephew and with his friends in Danville and at Monroeton Golf Course. As per his wishes, his remains were donated to further the advancement of science. A memorial service will be held at Mount Hermon Baptist Church on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Steve Chromy and the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends and visitors at the church on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 5 until 7:30 p.m. The family would like to thank the medical staff at Duke Cancer Center and Legacy Hospice, now SOVAH Hospice, for their excellent care of Mr. Hardy during his illness. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation to Transition Pregnancy Solutions at 2960 North Main St, Danville, VA 24540 or Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association at 223 Riverview Dr, Danville, VA 24541 be made in his memory. Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Hardy family.  Online condolences can be made at www.townesfuneralhome.com
