Inez Chapman Gaddy, the daughter of the late Lester Wadell Chapman and Murriel Elizabeth Saunders Chapman of Maiden, NC, and wife of Dr. Clifford Garland Gaddy, Sr., of Danville, VA, passed away peacefully from this life on Tuesday December 27th at the age of 92. Inez was a beautiful soul who spent a lifetime serving her family, friends, church and community with unconditional love. She had a heart and spirit as beautiful as her warm smile. She was the wisest, most loving and giving person her family has ever known. She was quick to help and slow to judge. She always looked for the positive in every situation and when needed, spoke truthfully, but always with kindness and concern for others. Born in Belmont, North Carolina, Inez was Valedictorian of her high school class and never made a grade lower than “A” until she fell head-over-heels in love with Clifford when she was sixteen years old. At Wingate Junior College she was co-editor of the yearbook (with Clifford) as well as winner of the Miss Wingate beauty pageant. Inez cared deeply about the Danville community and its health. She served Danville in many ways, as President of the Wednesday Club, President of the Danville YWCA, board member of the Danville Pittsylvania County Mental Health Association, the Danville Medical Auxiliary, and teaching adult literacy. A dedicated Christian from childhood, Inez served as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church, where she and Cliff were members for more than 60 years. First Baptist Church was a second home to them. A voracious reader, she may have single-handedly kept every bookstore in Pittsylvania County in business for years, setting an example for her children which is reflected in their collective academic attainment: eleven post-secondary degrees. A loving mother of six children, a beloved grandmother of sixteen and a doting great-grandmother of ten, Nez loved her husband of 71 years with a devotion to him matched only by his devotion to her. Inez is survived by her husband, her sister, Sue Betty Chapman Tomlin of Lake Gaston, NC, her brother, Paul Wadell Chapman of Birmingham, AL, and by her children, Clifford Garland Gaddy, Jr., of Kensington, MD (Kerstin Tegin Gaddy), Charles Stephen Gaddy of Southern Pines, NC, Gary Douglas Gaddy of Orange County, NC, (Sandra Herring Gaddy) Robert Lawrence Gaddy of Gloucester, VA, (Evelyn Pilson Gaddy) Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Witman of Raleigh, NC, (William David Witman), Janet Marie Gaddy of Brown’s Summit, NC (Timothy Moran), and Elizabeth Putney Gaddy. Loving grandchildren are Benjamin Gaddy (Matney), Kristina Gaddy, Thomas Gaddy, Heather Gaddy Lycans (Jason), Erin Gaddy Meinhardt (Kurt), Anne Marie Gaddy Kriesel (John), Johanan Gaddy, Matthew Gaddy, Carson Bloomberg Lutchansky (Nathan), Austin Bloomberg (Chelsea), Carolyn Witman, Emma Witman, William Witman II, John Lea, Jeremy Lea, Jason Lea, and Jodi Lea. Great grandchildren are Sidney Gaddy, Lucy Lycans, William Lycans, Ari Meinhardt, Cooper Kriesel, Charlie Kriesel, Adrian Lutchansky, Parker Lutchansky, Kimbe Lea, and Jayden Lea. Nez and Cliff had countless lifelong friendships, which tremendously enriched all of their lives. The Memorial/Celebration of Life service for Inez will be at First Baptist Church in Danville, VA on Saturday, January 7th at 2:00 PM with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. There will be visitation with the family at First Baptist in the Heritage Room from 1:00-2:00PM before the service. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the SAFEchild Advocacy Center in Raleigh, NC in honor of Nez’s lifelong devotion to and love of children. SAFEchild 864 W.
