Harding Woodrow “Mac” McDaniel, 100, of Danville, VA, passed away on June 28, 2022 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Harding was born on May 19, 1922, in Lunenburg County, VA, to the late Rorer Smith McDaniel and the late Pearle Grey Barker McDaniel. Harding was married to the late Vivian Goad McDaniel in 1945, who predeceased him on July 2, 2019, after 73 years of marriage. Dad has now met Mom at the gates of Heaven and they are together again!! Harding was the eldest surviving member of the former Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church where he loved serving as greeter until his health declined. Harding will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him. You weren’t a stranger for long if you ever met our Dad! A veteran of the US Navy, he served four years aboard the destroyer escort USS Greiner (DE-37) in WWII in the South Pacific. Harding was employed by the City of Danville, VA Fire Department Bridge Street Fire Station #1 for over 30 years, many as a driver of the pumper and ladder truck. His grand 100th Birthday celebration was the salute by the firetrucks and the hospitality of the firemen of the ladder truck who were so patient and kind to talk to dad. He talked for the rest of the day about the excitement of their visit. Thank you to the Danville Fire Department from the bottom of our hearts! Harding will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Linda M. Bass (Barry), of Sutherlin, VA and JoAnne M. Cassell, of Danville, VA; son, Roger McDaniel (Caroline), of St. Albans, WV; grandchildren, Stephanie B. Gibson (Cameron), Steven Bass, Christian M. Cassell (Miranda), Micah C. Cassell (Davina), Shiloh Stevens (Jeff), Caroline Buscher (Tommy); six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Annie M. Goad, of Jamestown, NC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. The family would like to express a special thanks for his loving care from his special friends, Jeanette, Shelia, Helen, Wanda, Gloria, and Chevy. You were so special to share in his life and he loved each of you!
