It is with joy and sadness that we mourn the passing of Gordon Elwell McCubbins (January 1, 2017)-joy that he is with Christ and those who have gone before and sadness for those who loved and mourn him. He was born in Danville on March 6, 1927 to parents Claude Thomas McCubbins and Berla Royal McCubbins, who predeceased him. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy K. McCubbins, his sisters; Catherine Claire McCubbins, Marian Estelle McCubbins and his brother, Claude Thomas McCubbins, Jr. Gordon is survived by his daughter; Patricia M. Lineberry and her husband Timothy, his grandson Joseph B. Lineberry and wife Sara, and his granddaughter Katherine K. Lineberry and her boyfriend Joshua W. Walker. He also leaves behind four granddogs; Maggie, Nessie, Duke and Shady. Gordon served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of West Main Baptist Church. He faithfully served as a Principal in the Danville Public Schools for 33 years, retiring in June of 1987. He always said “retirement with his family was the best job he ever had.” We send a very special thank you and many blessings to his personal caregiver, Kate Dickerson. They became fast friends and she became a special part of our family. We are truly grateful for the loving care given to him the past 2 years by the nurses and staff at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery with the Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. The family will be at the residence of his daughter, Pattie, 117 Dakota Drive. In lieu of flowers, please honor him with a donation to a charity of your choice.
