Frederick Roth

Mr. Frederick John Roth, III, 71, of Clemmons, NC and Keeling, Va. passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 in the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Care Unit after a valiant struggle with Frontal-temporal Brain Degeneration. Mr. Roth was born a prisoner of war in a Japanese concentration camp in Manila, Philippine Islands on July 28, 1942. His father, Army 2nd LT. Frederick J. Roth, Jr. and his mother, Mildred Schott Roth, were stationed in the Philippine Islands when the Japanese invaded the islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor which was the beginning of WWII. His parents were captured and placed in separate concentration camps. Young Roth and his mother survived the war to return to the US and he became a naturalized US citizen at the age of 10. His father did not survive and young Roth never had a chance to meet his Dad. Now the heavenly reunion has begun! Frederick graduated from Sanford High School in Sanford, Florida and attended the Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, S. C. Later he served in the US Navy for four years. He was stationed in Cuba during the Cuban Missle Crisis in 1963 under the John F. Kennedy Administration. He retired from IBM (International Business Machines) with 25 years service as a Field Engineer. He was a member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church, Keeling, Va. where he served as an Elder. His hobbies included golf and fishing. He was blessed with an exuberance for life and a great sense of humor. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Ann Cardwell Roth. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Carroll Cardwell and his wife, Claudia, two nieces, Tracey C. Roberts (Jay) and Tiffany C. Joseph (Jeremy) and three special cousins, George Frederick Schott, Patricia Quintin, and Jean Shank. He also leaves behind five "furry" friends, Midget, Boots, Silver, Paula and his loyal recliner chair buddy, Jumper. Funeral Services will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, June 3rd at Kentuck Presbyterian Church, 9865 Old Richmond Road, Keeling, VA 24566 with Pastor David Smith officiating. Burial will be private at the Ingram-Cardwell Family Cemetery in Keeling, VA. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 1st from 6 until 8 PM, at Frank Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Clemmons Chapel, 2849 Middlebrook Drive, Clemmons, NC.
