Mr. Frank Herman Shackelford, Jr., age 94 and formerly of 217 Floral Avenue died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in heath for the past two years. He had been a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home since August of 2012. Mr. Shackelford was born in Danville on March 13, 1918, a son of the late Frank H. Shackelford, Sr. and Blanche Phillips Shackelford. He was married to the late Marie Buck Shackelford who died in l971. Mr. Shackelford was retired from Southern Railroad as a car inspector after fifty years of service. He attended Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and West Main Baptist Church. Mr. Shackelford was a Life Member of the American Legion Dan River Post #1097, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Member of Ducks Unlimited and Quails Unlimited. He was also a member of the Halifax Gun Club. Mr. Shackelford was working for Southern Railroad and enlisted in the U. S. Army at the outbreak of World War II, and attained the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. He was involved in the Normandy Invasion serving in Patton's Third Army until the end of the war. After the war he returned to Southern Railroad. Mr. Shackelford was the last remaining member of his immediate family. He will be sadly missed by his caregivers, friends and family, Wanda Widener, James Buck, John Evans, Larry Duncan and Eddie Freeze. It was his wish that memorials may be directed to the National Rifle Association. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Lee Ellison officiating. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097 and the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.
