Francis Kinn

Francis Zane Kinn, Age 93, departed this world, to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 21, 2014. He was born on February 21, 1921 in Sunbury, PA, a son of the late Harry P. Kinn and Mary Clementine Galloway Kinn. Zane graduated from Sunbury High School, Sunbury, PA on June 4, 1941. He was a drum major in the band, receiving a champion trophy and letterman in the Glee Club. He sang in three operettas as a lead tenor singer and received a gold key. He also participated in wrestling and received his letter in that sport. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where he sang in the church choir, served as a Sunday School teacher, secretary, treasurer and president of his class. He was a builder of the church museum, member of the official board and chairman of the historic society. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post #325, Southern Square Dance Club as a historian and dancer, I..O.O.F., and Bethesda Lodge #51 (Noble Grand, Past Grand, and recording secretary). He also served as an Eagle Scout advisor and was builder of the aircraft and rocket museum housed at the Danville Regional Airport. Zane was a veteran of World War II. He volunteered for service in June of 1941 and served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. He later served in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1949 and was recalled from the United States Air Force Reserves for the Korean War in 1950. He attained the rank of T/SGT. His military decorations include the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal WWII, Europe-Africa-Middle East Medal WWII, Victory Medal WWII, Army Good Conduct Medal WWII, WWII Occupation Medal (Germany) Army. US Air Force Service Medal, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation (Battle of the Kasserine Pass, Africa) Air Force Presidential Unit Citation (Oak Leaf Cluster, Battle of Po Valley, Italy), one Silver Battle Campaign Star, four Bronze Battle Campaign Stars with a total of nine stars, 12 Citation Awards from the four armed forces of the United States for 40 years service as a civilian for the showing of military movies, public displays and lectures. He was retired from the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier with 27 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Mary Bernice Kinn and her husband, Warren Lester Kemery, Harry Robert Kinn and his wife Mary Elizabeth Engle Kinn, Edith Lois Kinn, Raymond Jerome Kinn and his wife Irva Deane Ballard Kinn and Donald Floyd Kinn. Zane was the last of his generation. Zane is survived by his loving wife Ann Conwell Stigall Kinn, whom he married on July 17, 1948; three sons, Richard Zane Kinn, Jerry Lee Kinn and Robert Bradford Kinn; grandsons, Joshua Bradford Kinn, Zachary Richard Kinn and Cameron Alexandria Kinn; and a granddaughter, Calla Nicole Kinn, Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 from Townes Memorial Chapel at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Barry Foster officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with military honors given by American Legion Dan River Post #1097. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 7 to 8:30 PM. The family suggests that memorial may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 Zane's ultimate aim in life was to be of service to all mankind, with no expected returns. His great love was his Lord, his country and his wife of 60 plus years and his three sons.
