Frances Fallis Skenderis

d. February 4, 2025

Frances Fallis Skenderis, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, entered eternal rest on February 4, 2025. Born in Klafsion, Evrytania, Greece on October 31, she left the country of her birth shortly after World War II had ended and during the Greek Civil War with her sisters and mother to join her father in the United States. She married the love of her life, Spiros, in 1958. Together they raised their son, Bill, in a bilingual, bicultural home in Danville, VA, infusing modern American life with traditional Greek values. People knew her as a loving wife, mother, and friend devoted to her family. She attended St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church for over 70 years, singing liturgical hymns in the choir for most of that time. Frances was a tireless worker for the church, volunteering thousands of hours over the years to help conduct successful bake sales, spaghetti dinners, and festivals in support of St. Peter’s. In Danville, she was a member of several bridge clubs, the Wednesday Club, and the Danville Garden Club. In her later years, she devoted much of her attention to her family and in 2021 moved to Virginia Beach to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. She is predeceased by her loving husband, the Honorable Spiros B. Skenderis; her parents, John D. and Harikleia J. Fallis; her in-laws, Basil S. and Margaret B. Skenderis; and her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and George J. Zourzoukis. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Basil S. and Roxanne Skenderis; her grandchildren, Spiros and Marcella, all of Virginia Beach and Newport News, VA; her sister, Androniki J. Fallis, of Columbia, SC; her special nieces and nephews, Constantine Zourzoukis and Dimitrios Zourzoukis, both of Asheville, NC; John and Susan Zourzoukis and their children, Anastasia and Connor Watson, all of Columbia, SC , and George and Sarah Zourzoukis, of Charleston, SC; her very special little great, great nieces, Penelope Watson, of Columbia, and Mary-Mason Zourzoukis, of Charleston; Godchildren Katherine Pappas and her family of Virginia Beach, VA and Andy Maurakis and his family of Vancouver, BC; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends . The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM, at St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church, 116 Jefferson Avenue, Danville, Virginia, with the Very Reverend Fr. Nicholas G. Bacalis and the Reverend Fr. George Bessinas officiating. Visitation and a Trisagion prayer, will precede the service beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 400 Robertson Avenue, Danville, Virginia. The family would like to thank Trinity Hospice for their care and guidance through the last few weeks of Frances’s life and especially the administration and staff of Commonwealth Senior Living at King’s Grant House for their love and kindness these past 2 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Frances Skenderis to St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church and the Spiros B. Skenderis Scholarship of the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.
