Frances Reese McMillan passed away on December 17, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Jefferson Reese and Janie Beck Bryan Reese. Frances was born on May 6, 1932 in Portsmouth, VA. She grew up in Hamlet, NC. She married Neill K. McMillan on January 15, 1955. They moved to Danville in 1958. She worked for the Social Security Administration and taught in the local public schools. Frances was a graduate of Averett College. Upon her husband’s death in 1978, she took over the management of his radio station, WILA, until her retirement in 1992. Frances was a long-time member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, serving on a variety of boards and committees within the church. She was also a member of the Wednesday Club and served on numerous boards of civic and charitable organizations. Frances was the recipient of the Jane Harris Memorial Award. Frances loved her family. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, playing bridge and spending time at her home in Holden Beach. She also had a great love of cats and was a collector of cat memorabilia. She is survived by two sons: Neill Kirby McMillan Jr. and his wife Adaire of Camp Dennison, OH and Arthur Reese McMillan and his wife Jenny Morris of Raleigh, NC. She is survived by her daughter Jane Holden McMillan of Danville, VA. She is also survived by and two grandsons: Ruben McMillan and his wife Ellie and Rafe McMillan of Cincinnati, OH and her great granddaughter Avery Frances McMillan of Cincinnati, OH. Other survivors include her niece’s children Matthew and Brittany of Suwanee, GA and her nephew Jeff Steorts and his wife Michelle and son Jesse of Acworth, GA. She was predeceased by her sisters Betty Rose Baucom and Janie Reese Steorts, and her niece Betty Lacy.
A funeral service will be held Friday December 23, 2022 1:00PM at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 12:00 to 1:00pm. Interment will be private at Highland Burial Park. The service will be streamed live on Mount Vernon's Facebook page.
