Over the course of her adult life, Evelyn held several jobs until she started her long career at Dan River Mills in the 4 Grey Inspection Department. Evelyn was an active member of Milton United Methodist Church for 74 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher for the youngest children for several decades and was honored by the church for her dedicated service in 2008. She was famous for making a Newman family recipe for chocolate pie that was served annually at Homecoming. The pie was so popular that many people went to the dessert table first! Over the years her hobbies included reading, refinishing furniture, traveling, knitting and crocheting. Halcott and Evelyn took one major trip each year for many years that included visits to England, France, Italy, Germany, Egypt, Russia, Israel, South America, and many others. Her handiwork included crocheting a baby blanket for each grandchild and each great-grand child, the last one being completed in April 2020. Fiercely independent, Evelyn was still living alone, driving her car, and taking care of all of her affairs until early August 2021. Her motto late in life was, “Keep on keeping on!” Not one to sit idle in retirement, for decades she was a hospital volunteer sewing hand puppets for young hospital patients. Even through the pandemic curbed a lot of activities, she tried to get out and go somewhere in Danville every day. For many years you could find her at Wendy’s on Piney Forest Road eating lunch and socializing with her friends. The family would like to thank the Danville Lifesaving and Rescue Squad and SOVAH for their kindness, compassion and service. A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 2021, 1:00 p.m. at Highland Burial Park in Danville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Milton, NC United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
