Evelyn Alfred Owen Rowland Moorefield Hughes, 95, passed away on June 23, 2019 at SOVAH Medical Center, Danville. Evelyn was born in Pittsylvania County on March 27, 1924, the youngest child of William Amos Rowland and Jennie Kate Eanes Rowland. She graduated from Renan High School in 1941 as class salutatorian. Evelyn later attended Longwood College earning a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Education. She taught in the Danville Public Schools for 22 years at Grove Park Elementary School, Stonewall Jackson Elementary School, and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. Evelyn was a long time member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where she worked in the Children's Sunday School departments and Vacation Bible School for over 30 years. She was also active with the Women's Mission Group, the adult choir and the Dorcas Sunday School class. In December, 1942 Evelyn married Charlie Carter Moorefield who was killed in October, 1944 in Northern Italy. On March 22, 1946 she married W. Fred Hughes, Jr. who predeceased her on January 14, 2002. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law Constance V. Hughes, two brothers, four sisters and several nieces and nephews Evelyn is survived by her son W. Fred Hughes, III of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida and her daughter Anne H. Freeze(Tommy) of Danville. She is also survived by grandchildren Martha Anne Adkins(Roger), Elizabeth Michel(Jason), all of Danville, Christopher Hughes(Keturah) of Indialantic, Florida, Cory Hughes(Gaby) of Ashburn, Virginia and great grandchildren Anne Rylee and Owen Adkins, Devin Michel, Katherine, Caroline, Andrew and Allison Hughes. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, 1026 North Main Street, Danville at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jonathan Hilliard officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 pm on July 2, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Children's Programs of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
