Eunice Howard

July 28, 1937 — February 19, 2024

Eunice Snead Howard, age 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 19, 2024.

Born on July 28, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Arthur William Snead and Rosa Taylor Snead. Eunice was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James Newton Howard, whom she affectionally called “Babe.” In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Irene Snead Baggerly, one nephew, Barry Michael Hendrick, and one niece, Vickie Saunders Meneses. She is survived by one sister, Brenda Snead Moss, 11 nieces, and 7 nephews.

Eunice, a long-time member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, chose to serve others by working in the laundry department for 29 years at Roman Eagle Rehab and Healthcare Center ensuring that the residents were provided with clean linens. Her pride in maintaining comfort and cleanliness extended to her own home as well. Her door was always open to her family and friends, and she often welcomed them by saying, “Come on in, Sugar.” Visitors found her home tidy, neat, and welcoming. Eunice was early to rise, and quick to get a home-cooked breakfast on the kitchen table for her husband, James, before they headed out for the day’s work. For many years, she and James hosted a Christmas morning breakfast of oysters for her family that traveled to their home from local and out of town locations. In addition to the oyster breakfast, she and her husband were experts at making homemade ice cream. Sunday summers were often spent in the backyard as the men turned the hand-cranked ice cream freezer. But, the flavor of ice cream began with Eunice, as she prepped the fruit from the kitchen. Her favorite flavor was banana, but peach was a close second, while the younger generations usually requested chocolate. Eunice was not much of a traveler but took great pride in collecting refrigerator magnets that she shaped into the US map from her nieces’ and nephews’ adventures. Eunice was always ready for a game of Rook, Checkers, and Sorry! She had a knack for creating drawings and those that she favored are displayed in her home.

Eunice will be remembered for her warmth, simplicity, and humbleness. She was one of a kind and will be greatly missed!

Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Townes Funeral Home in Danville, Virginia, on Sunday, February 25th at 2PM with the Reverend Scott Bortz officiating. The chapel will open at 1 p.m. for visitation with the family. Interment will follow at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church in Roxboro, North Carolina.
