Eugene Field Moorefield, Jr., 87 of Danville went to be with his Savior on Sunday, December 10, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Elizabeth Younger Moorefield. Born March 9, 1930 in Danville, Va. to Mary Jane Martin Moorefield & Eugene F. Moorefield, Sr., Gene was a retired Vice President from John W. Daniel, Inc. & the Daniel Group, where he worked for over 45 years. He had a big giving heart and worked in the community in numerous and diverse ways. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Henry Fork Service Center for many years and was instrumental in raising the funds for their current facility. He was past chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and chief election judge for the city of Danville. Another passion Gene shared was his membership and service of 65 years to the Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Retiring from active service as Assistant District Commissioner of the Dan River District and receiving the District Alumnus Emeritus Award. Other scouting accomplishments include: Silver Beaver Award, Distinguished Commissioner Award, Vigil Member of Order of the Arrow, God and Country Award, Torch Award, chairing the council camping committee and being instrumental in developing the High Knoll trail. He served as District Lay Leader & instructor for the Danville District of the United Methodist Church and brought pastors into the United Methodist Church through his lay speaking ministries. He also served as a Sunday school teacher at Fairview United Methodist Church, Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church and Westover Hills United Methodist Church. He served on the Administrative Boards at Fairview and Westover Hills, jurisdictional delegate to the Virginia United Methodist Church Conference, and on many local boards in the Danville district including many years with the Danville Cluster of the Danville District of the United Methodist Church. Gene was a 32-degree Scottish Right Mason (obtaining the York Rite Purple Cord) and Worshipful Master and past treasurer of Morotock Blue Lodge. He was elected Most Excellent Grand High Priest for the Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia in 2000. Other masonic positions he served in include Excellent Chief of the Knight Masons, Governor of the York Rite, Puissant Sovereign of the Red Cross of Constantine and Secretary of the Allied Mason Degree. In addition to being a community activist, Gene’s greatest joy in life was his beloved family. He is survived by his children Mary Patricia Allen of Mechanicsville, Lois Yvonne and Ronald (Ron) Davis of Dublin, Eugene F., III and Emmaline Moorefield of Brookneal and Gary Lee and Myra Moorefield, of Danville. Gene was preceded in death by his son Martin Younger Moorefield. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Yvonne Elizabeth Allen, Elizabeth Ann Moorefield, Ronald Eugene Davis, Jr., Megan Lee Moorefield Woods and Martin Eugene Moorefield, great-grandsons Brian Eugene Thomas, Christopher Landon Fry & Jayce Lee Woods, a niece, Lois Daniel Reil, nephews James Madison Alderson, Jr. and Thomas Eugene Alderson. Mr. Moorefield was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Ola Martin Moorefield, Lois M. Daniel & Mary Jane Derrossett.The family would like to especially thank Wanda Evans and Brenda Jefferson. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Fairview United Methodist Church by Reverend Jennifer Coffey, Reverend Kathleen Monge and Reverend Robert Huffman with interment and Masonic Rites to follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday, December 15, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church.
