Ernestine Carter Adkins, 91, died Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Roman Eagle Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born on September 12, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Claude Lee Carter and Jessie Gibbs Carter. On June 18, 1943 she married Thomas Edward Adkins, Sr., who predeceased her on April 18, 1992. She spent all of her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, L. Steven Adkins, Sr. and wife, Pat Adkins of Danville; two daughters, Brenda Kay Adkins and Janet A. Richardson and husband Jimmy Richardson, all of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Adkins; one sister, Thelma C. Turner, of Roanoke, VA; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by a son, Tommy Adkins, Jr.; and four brothers, Hubert Lee Carter, Frank E. Carter, Jack David Carter and Claude Lee Carter, Jr. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Townes Memorial Chapel at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Brad Childress officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, prior to the funeral, at Townes Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 PM and at other times at 1312 Jamerson Road North. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
