DANVILLE, VA- Elizabeth Bowyer Scearce, 92, joined her Heavenly family on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after a decline in health over the past week. She had been a resident for the past six years. She was born in Fries, VA on August 28, 1925, one of five daughters and four sons born to the late Carl Bowyer and Ethel Davis Bowyer. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Dixie Bowyer Williams, Jewel Bowyer Makus, and Peggy Bowyer, and her brothers, Ernest Bowyer, Eldin Bowyer, J.D. Bowyer, and Jack Bowyer. Also predeceasing her were four of her five children: her beloved sons, Len Scearce, Tommy Scearce, and Wilbur Scearce, and her precious daughter, Phyllis Scearce Collins. Also, she was predeceased by her beloved grandson, Thomas Scearce, and a very dear friend, Roy Hall. Mrs. Scearce was married to the late James L. Scearce, Sr. from February 12, 1942 until November 12, 1987. She worked for Dan River Mills, Inc. in the Inspection Department for many years and was known to walk to and from work on a regular basis. As an active member of River View Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and served in many church roles and activities, using her gifts as a multi-talented musician to play her favorite, “Amazing Grace” on her violin, the same violin she had owned since she was 12 years old. Mrs. Scearce loved all types of music, especially hymnals and country music! She was also an active member of the community, playing her violin for the residents of Roman Eagle as well as volunteering at God’s Storehouse and The Salvation Army. She loved her family; she was always there for her parents, her siblings, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and her great great gandchildren. Mrs. Scearce was a great cook and loved cooking for her family; she was known for the “best pineapple cake” and selflessly, always feed others first. Survivors include: one daughter, Karen Scearce Johnston (David); one sister, Carol Bowyer Hall (Jay); nine grandchildren, Allen Scearce (Cindy), Stephen Scearce (Kristi), Timothy Scearce, Caroline Pressly (Ian), Sarah Johnston (Corey), Katie Johnston (Donny), Michael Scearce (Liz), Lisa Dowdy and Christie Smith; 12 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Vincent Falgui for his excellent care of our loved one as well as the Roman Eagle East Wing staff, activity directors, physical therapists, and the entire staff of wonderfully patient, dedicated, and loving people who cared for our Elizabeth.
