Elizabeth Leggett

September 1, 1944 — December 25, 2018

The weather on January 9, 1944 was cold and snowy as a young mother and dad struggled for a young baby girl, Elizabeth Herndon Wright, to have life.  Our Lord Jesus looked over the situation and intervened to give life to this young baby who would come to be known as Elizabeth Wright Leggett.  She married the late Thomas William “Tom” Leggett, Jr. on December 17, 1967 and they moved to Danville in December 1971.       In addition to her husband, Betty was predeceased by her parents, Claude Wilson Wright, Sr. and Virginia Dare Ratliffe Wright.      Betty attended Averett College. Her main purpose in life was to serve her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle 2.  She was a member of the Aldersgate Ringers and a member of the Altar Guild. She helped begin the communion service at Stratford House as an outreach for the church and served continuously from its inception. She was active in the Wednesday fellowship dinners and taught children’s Sunday school classes.       She was also an active member of The Wednesday Club and the Gabriella Garden Club serving as president from 2015 to 2017 and she loved sunflowers. She enjoyed playing party bridge and loved entertaining family and friends at her house at Hyco Lake.     Betty is survived by two sons, Mark Wright Leggett of Danville and Thomas William Leggett, III of Richmond; a brother, Claude “Bill” Wilson Wright, Jr. and his wife, DeEtte, of South Hill, Va.; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Leggett Dwyer of Orlando, Florida; a former sister-in-law and very special friend, Sonja Wright of Richmond, Va.; and a number of special nieces and nephews.      Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 2 PM at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bart Fletcher officiating.      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 107 West Main Street, Danville, VA 24541, Ephesus Baptist Church, 4198 Goodes Ferry Road, South Hill, VA  23970, or Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541
