Eleanor Spencer Craig, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend died Tuesday, July 25, 2023. She was born on December 26, 1926, the daughter of the late Marian Frances Spencer and Harold Bennett Spencer in Woonsocket, RI.
Eleanor was a graduate of Mary A. Burnham School and Mt. Holyoke College. On August 19, 1950, she married the late Stuart Laurens Craig.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Alexander and her friend, Douglas McBride; her son, David Craig and his wife, Allison; and her daughter-in-law, Kristine Craig. She also is survived by grandchildren, Lauren Alexander, Bevin Craig Alexander, Lessley Craig and her fiancé, Jake Swafford, Sarah Dickson, and Hunter Craig; her brother, Robert Spencer; and her great grandchild, Savannah Laurens Dickson, and several nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Stuart L. Craig; her son, Stuart L. Craig Jr.; and her sister, Virginia S. Ewell.
Following college, Eleanor engaged in Social Work in Nassau County, NY and Charlottesville, VA. She also engaged in Medical Social Work at Bellevue Hospital and Bird S. Coler Hospital in New York City, NY. After moving to Danville, VA she volunteered at the Contact Crisis Line, God’s Storehouse, and the YWCA.
Eleanor enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States, Canada, and many foreign countries with her late husband, Stuart.
Eleanor was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Danville, VA.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street, Danville, VA. The family will greet friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, God’s Pit Crew, God’s Storehouse, or to the charity of your choice.
