Eleanor W. Barkley, 93, of 222 Astor Court, Danville, VA, passed on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Eleanor was born August 25, 1929, to George Menefee and Cora Armentrout Willis in Rappahannock Co., VA. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1945, and soon after met the love of her life, Graham Jackson Barkley, and married on October 18, 1947.
Eleanor joined Trinity United Methodist Church in 1955 where she held many leadership positions. She and her husband operated Park Place Pharmacy and she worked as secretary of Southwood Realty and Auction Co. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with her husband. She was a long-time member of VFW Auxiliary 647 (77 years) and American Legion Auxiliary 325. Eleanor was a competitive player in Bridge and Hand & Foot. She was lovingly considered a mother by many.
In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her sister, Cora W. Honts, and her brothers, William Willis and George Willis. She is survived by her children Gaye Barkley, Beverly Abbott, and Nan Brown (Harry) of Danville and Jack Barkley of Durham, NC; three grandchildren, Zachary Abbott (Lacy) of Richmond, Katie Barkley of Durham, NC, Graham Barkley III of Denver, CO; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Abbott; her sister Barbara St. Louis of Columbia, SC, brother-in-law Frank Barkley of Staunton, VA and one special neighbor, Kelly Powell.
Visitation will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, March 12 from 1-2 PM followed by the service at the church at 2:00 PM. Graveside rites will be held at Highland Burial Park immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Helping Hands Thrift Store, VFW Auxiliary 647, and/or Trinity United Methodist Church.
