Edward Kodejs, 93, of Danville, VA died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at his home in accordance with his wishes. Born in Crete, Nebraska, on March 8, 1921, he was the first born of four to Joseph Kodejs and Emma Daniel Kodejs. Ed was raised on a farm in Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. At the age of 11 he was plowing fields with a four-horse two bottom plow. In March of 1939 Ed joined the U.S. Army with the idea of sending money home to help the Family Farm. During World War II he served 2 tours overseas, ending up in Germany where he was a Staff Sergeant with the 353 rd Infantry, 89 Division. He was a Good Soldier. After the war he returned to Danville where he married Helene Moore Kodejs on August 26, 1945. Ed worked for Dan River Mills for over 20 years. He worked in the mill by day and gave music lessons in the evenings to earn extra money. He left the mill and went to work for Newport News Shipbuilding where he worked for over 24 years. He never missed a days work. When he retired he was the second oldest employee at the Yard. He was a Good Worker. Ed and the generation that he represented will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Helene, and two brothers, Lumir Kodejs of Vancouver, B.C. and Milo Kodejs of Lincoln, NE. Suvivors include his son Edward Tipton Kodejs and wife Gerry of Danville, Va. and a sister, Sylvia Kodejs Pecka of Lincoln, NE. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the grave site in Highland Burial Park, Danville, VA. Services will be conducted by The Rev Dr. CAM McIntire. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7 until 8:30 pm at Townes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial donations be made to College Park Baptist Church. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Kodejs family.
