Dorothy "Dottie" Annette Dodd of 2314 Franklin Turnpike died at Danville Regional Medical Center on July 6, 2014. Born January 2, 1952, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Dennis Nelson Dodd, Sr. and Dorothy "Dot" Pauline Gilbert Dodd. Dottie was the granddaughter of the late Herbert and Estelle Giles Dodd and the late Morrison Thomas Gilbert, Sr. and Laura Manning Gilbert. She lived all her life in the Danville/Pittsylvania County area. Dottie was a 1970 graduate of Tunstall High School, a 1974 graduate of Radford College, and she received her Master's Degree in 1977 from the University of Virginia. She taught school for thirty-three years in Pittsylvania County Schools, including Whitmell Elementary, Central Middle, Brosville Middle, Tunstall Middle and Union Hall Elementary. Dottie loved teaching, especially to those who needed help in reading. In 1992, she was named Outstanding Middle School Teacher by the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Virginia and National Education Associations, the Retired Teachers Association, the Blue Ridge Mended Hearts Chapter #16, and a former member of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Dottie was also a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she loved attending and participating, especially with the activities sponsored by The Fisherman's Club which has assisted many families over the years. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Maribeth (MacConnel) Dodd, Jr. of Bradenton, FL; her niece and her niece's husband, Jessica D. and Larry Hudson, of Raleigh, NC; Her nephew, Billy MacConnel, of Bradenton, FL; her former sister-in-law Vi A. Dodd, of Richmond; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Addie) Wilkerson of Eden, NC; and an aunt, Mrs. Dorothy D. Jackson, of Winston Salem, NC. She also leaves many dear cousins and friends; a best friend, Mrs. Paula Collie and Paula's two sons, Willis and Bob; her precious goddaughter, Casey Devon Collie; a good friend and advisor, Jim Winn, of Danville; her beloved cat, Spunky; and his wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Kay Geyer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Susan Hannah officiating. At Dottie's request, please do not send flowers.
