Doris Smith

June 7, 1930 — February 11, 2014

Doris Blue Smith, 84, of 110 Pendleton Rd, passed away at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, NC on Sunday, November 2, 2014. She was born in Vardaman, Mississippi on July 6, 1930, to the late Earl and Lorene Blue. She grew up on a cotton farm, where her parents were also school teachers. She was valedictorian of her High School class and then graduated in 1950 as a Registered Nurse from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. Doris worked as a nurse in the Danville Regional Medical Center for several years and was a longtime member of Rivermont Baptist Church in Danville, serving as a Sunday School teacher from 1965 to 2010. Along with her parents she is preceded in death by a son, Van Stuart Smith. Surviving is her husband of 63 years, Edward D Smith and sons, Rory Smith and wife, Lori of Semora, NC, and Brett Smith of Richmond, and daughters Dawn Beatty and husband Robert, of Fairfax Station and Kim Creager of Winchester; grandchildren, Stuart Smith, Virginia Beatty, Rachel Creager, Christine Beatty, Robert E. Beatty and Rebecca Creager; and sisters Jean Moore of Zanesville, OH and Ann Hannaford and husband Bob of Vardaman, MS. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday November 5th at 2 pm at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Johnson of Ridgeway Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to God's Storehouse in Danville.
