“The” Doris Lee Davis Pritchett, 90, of Stratford House, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. “An inconvenience rightly looked upon becomes an adventure”. Born February 15, 1926 in Durham, NC, the daughter of the late Roger B. Davis and Eunice Hutchins Davis. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Harry Wooding Pritchett, Jr in 2004. She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, The Shakespeare Club, The Wednesday Club, The Gabriella Garden Club, and The Danville Golf Club. She was a philosophy and humanities major at Stratford College and received her Masters Degree in Dance from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. As a young woman she enjoyed a career in dance starting locally at The Anne Boyer School Of Dance. Her studies followed at The American Ballet School in New York. Professionally she danced with the USO on tour in the South Paci?c. She later was a dance instructor at St. Anne’s School in Charlottesville, VA and at Stratford College and Averett University in Danville. In 1974 she joined the Danville Unit of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service as a 4-H agent providing a creative approach to nutrition and food preparation. Her students called her the “tap dancing cooking lady”. After twenty years she retired from the Extension Service having served as Extension Home Economist and local Unit Director. Her retirement years provided time for volunteering. She enjoyed teaching reading through the Book Buddies program, The Wednesday Club Reading Project and the adult reading program, Project Literacy. She served as a docent at the Danville Museum Of Fine Arts And History and as a screener at the Free Clinic. At the age of 88, she published her book, Life On A Magic Carpet, a story of her dance career in New York and on tour with the USO. Her next book, Biplane To Bomber, the World War ll experiences of her husband, was published at the age of 89. She is survived by her brother Roger Caldwell Davis, her son Harry Wooding Pritchett lll, two daughters Anne Elizabeth Kendrick and her husband Ron, Sue Davis Fischer and her husband Paul, three grandchildren Harry Wooding Pritchett lV and his wife Haleigh, Tracey Anne Fischer, and Kelli Marie Fischer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and at other times at the residence.
