Doris Handy

Doris M. "Dot" Handy, 86, of 220 Park Circle, died at Riverside Heath and Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, August 23, 2015 after several weeks decline in health. Dot was born November 17, 1928 and graduated from Schoolfield High School in 1945. She was employed by Dan River and Riverdan and retired in 1994 after 46 years of service. She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Danville for which she served three terms as president. In 1984 she and a small group formed the Schoolfield High School Reunion Committee and served as president until she resigned in December, 2014. Dot was proud of being a founding member of the Schoolfield Preservation Foundation and a board member of the Schoolfield Museum and Cultural Center. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church. Dot was predeceased by her parents, David Ray and Ada Harris Handy and brother-in-law Arthur H. Parker. She is survived by sisters Elaine H. Parker, Danville, and Carol Handy of the residence; niece Melissa P. Taverner (David) and great nieces Rachel and Jordan Taverner. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Schoolfield Preservation Foundation, Post Office Box 2675, Danville, VA 24541. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. from the graveside at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend John Gentry officiating. The family will receive at Townes Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 12 to 1:30 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 220 Park Circle. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Handy family.
