Doris Astin

February 10, 1921 — June 2, 2019

Doris Dodson Astin, 97, wife of the late Edward George Astin, passed away quietly on February 6, 2019 at Riverside Healthcare, where she had been a resident for five years.         Born October 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harvie Blankenship and Lucille Spruce Dodson. She attended Danville public schools and was a graduate of Averett College.  She was a member of First Baptist Church.  Her personality was an asset as a Welcome Wagon and Avon representative.  During the 70s, she worked at Danville Memorial Hospital in the admitting office.  Doris loved her cats, and enjoyed playing bridge.       Surviving are her three sons, Edward George Astin, Jr.(Pat), of Rocky Mount, NC.;  Harvie Dodson Astin (Betsy) of Wilson, NC., William Dean Astin, (Beth), of Providence, NC, and her daughter, Ceil Astin Whitney (Lawrence), of Myrtle Beach, SC., and twelve  grandchildren: Rainey Astin Parks (Matt), Rebecca Astin Morganelli (Danny), Robyn Astin Saratt (Peter), Robert Astin, Chris Astin Crosswaite (Jeff), Lindsay Astin Yount (Andrew), William Dean Astin, Jr., Jonathan Astin (Becky), Matthew Astin (Keisha), Marisa Spruce Daley (Bob), Megan Jameson Sappington (Brandon), and twenty-two great grandchildren.  Her granddaughter, Jennifer Long, predeceased her in 2013.       Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 2 pm at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend John Carroll officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service.      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danville Humane Society, 996 S. Boston Road, Danville, VA  24540.
