Delano Cocke

July 24, 1933 — December 4, 2014

Delano "Del" Stone Cocke, age 80 of 4180 Riverside Drive, Danville, VA peacefully passed away April 12, 2014 after a brief stay at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Gretna, VA on July 24, 1933 to the late Peatross and Ruth Cocke. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy Simpson Cocke, and two daughters, Beverly A. Cocke of Danville, Jodie S. Cocke (Lorraine Cantolina) of Richmond, VA and one grandson, Frank W. Anderson, II of Richmond. He was predeceased by one brother, Hoyt Cocke (Mildred) of Richmond, VA and one brother-in-law Wallace Simpson of Bedford, VA, and is survived by brother Billy W. Cocke (Polly) of Richmond, and sisters Carolyn Hines of Gretna, and Lucy Simpson of Bedford. He was known as "Uncle Delna" to many nieces and nephews. Del retired from Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company in 1999 after a 30 year career with the company. He was a member of Danville Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge 42 of Gretna, VA , served on the Board of Directors for the Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Dept., and was a choir member of West Main Baptist Church. He enjoyed building miniature tobacco barns and other wood crafts, was an amateur photographer, avid reader, had a beautiful singing voice, loved to sketch and paint, and experienced TWO holes in one! The family would like to extend their gratitude to Del's caregivers Ann and Tameshia Stamps, the doctors and nurses at Riverside's West Wing and at Danville Regional Medical Center, and to friends and family for their continued support. Funeral services will be held at West Main Baptist Church 450 West Main St, Danville, VA Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Monday, April 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Donations can be made to West Main Baptist Church or Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Dept. in lieu of flowers. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Cocke family.
