Davis Edwin Newman, 93, of Danville, VA, died on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at his residence.
He was born in Danville, VA, on June 30, 1931, a son of the late Edwin Martin Newman and Mollie Wilmoth Newman. He was a lifelong resident of Danville where he retired as a sales manager for W.R. Grace and Company. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Korean War as a Combat Infantryman in the US Army 25th Infantry Division. He was a life member of the Korean Veterans Association, the American Legion Post #1097, and the VFW Post #647. He worked closely with the City of Danville and their engineers in planning and building the Veterans Memorial in Dan Daniels Park. He was a lifelong follower of Christ and served his Lord and Savior faithfully all of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Nancy Sparks Newman, of the residence.
In addition to his spouse, he is survived by two daughters, Trenace Newman Mantiply (David), and Laurie Newman Bailey (Dennis); five grandchildren, Samuel D. Mantiply (Leslie), Mollie Ann Mantiply, Joseph N. Mantiply (Ella), Austin D. Bailey (Rene’), and James F. Bailey (Perry); eight great grandchildren, Hope Bailey, Ella Bailey, Freeman Bailey, Royall Bailey, Jones Bailey, Katherine Mantiply, Emma Mantiply, and Lucy Mantiply; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Raphael Newman, and a sister, Jacqueline N. Robertson.
A private graveside service will be held in Highland Burial Park with The Reverend Austin Bailey (grandson) officiating with military honors conducted by the US Army and American Legion Post # 1097 Honor Guards. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Veterans Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, 541 Loyal St., Danville, VA, 24541.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his caregivers, Marie Dean, Marie Rudder, Olga Thorpe, Liz Haithcock, Sue Flowers, Carlene Wilson, Carolyn Perry, Staci Robinette, Jennifer Rudder, Tracy Tuck, and Brooke Saunders.
