Darrell Oakes

August 3, 1936 — March 1, 2018

Darrell “Wayne” Oakes, 81, husband of Mary Ann Oakes, of Morehead City, NC, passed away on January 3, 2018. Born in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was a son of the late Oscar Douglas and Ruby Owen Oakes. Wayne served in the United States Army and had a great love of music and enjoyed singing in his church choir. He also enjoyed being outdoors and fishing. Wayne loved being able to spend time with his family most of all. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Sidney W. Oakes (Cindy), Darrell T. Oakes, (Debra) and Clark D. Oakes; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Megan), Brittany, Colby, Jordan, Morgan and Macy Oakes; one great-granddaughter, Ava Oakes; and a sister, Marilyn Oakes. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Oakland United Methodist Church in Blairs, VA with the Reverend Jon Woodburn officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held for friends on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church of Morehead City, NC. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 5171 Glenwood Avenue, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27612 or to the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City, Music Department, 900 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC  28557.
