Daniel Howard Cooper, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Born on March 25, 1923 at Sago in Franklin County, Virginia, he was the son of Guy Cooper and Sallie Philpott Cooper, who both predeceased him. On July 1, 1950, he married Nancy Corbin Cooper, who predeceased him on October 21, 1999. Dan was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations as a member of the 868th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion having the rank of Corporal in the U.S. Army. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with 1 bronze star, Victory Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Cooper was a member of V.F.W. Post 647 and American Legion Post 325. Dan retired from Dan River, Inc after 43 years of service, having worked in the Research Department most of that time. He was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club. He was a faithful member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, having served on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Ushers, Laymen’s Fellowship, and as a past member of the Servicemen’s Bible Class. Dan was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Lucy C. Abbott, Algie C. Scott, and Odell C. Long; one brother, Warren H. Cooper; and, three nephews, Johnny C. Scott, Guy W. Long, and Donald “Chuck” Long. He is survived by one niece, Anne A. Hutcherson of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two nephews, Warren H. Cooper, Jr of Ashburn, Virginia, and Ricky Cooper of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and several great-nieces and nephews. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 11:00 am with the Reverend Frederick J. Vicks officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Cooper’s request that donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, 1120 G Street N. W., Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20005. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for all their love, care and support shown our uncle during his stay at the facility.
