Homer Dan Davis died, at the age of 84, on Thursday, November 25, 2021 in his home at 3204 Old Richmond Road, Danville, Virginia. He was born on October 7, 1937 in Pittsylvania County and was the eldest son of Daniel Davis and Dorothy Harris Davis. Dan was married to the former Sally Pleasant on June 16, 1962 at Christ Episcopal Church in Danville. He was a 1956 graduate of Dan River High School and a 1962 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B. S. Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. He served twelve years in the Virginia National Guard. Dan was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and had a rewarding career in public accounting, corporate accounting, and banking. He began his career as a staff accountant with A. M. Pullen, Certified Public Accountants in Greensboro and Winston Salem, North Carolina. Dan continued in public accounting as a senior staff accountant with Manning, Perkinson, Floyd & Company, Certified Public Accountants in Danville. Dan also worked as a corporate accountant in Danville for Anderson Brothers Manufacturing, where he served as treasurer, and at Commodore Corporation where he was corporate controller. In January 1969, he began his 44-year career in banking with Mutual Savings & Loan Association, which later became Mutual Savings Bank. He served as the Bank’s secretary and treasurer. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1972 and was promoted to senior vice-president and treasurer. In 1987, he was promoted to president and chief operations officer and was named chief executive officer in 1995. Mutual Savings Bank merged with American National Bank & Trust Company in 1996, and Dan became executive vice-president of American National Bankshares, Inc., senior vice-president of American National Bank & Trust Company, and president and chief executive officer of Mutual Mortgage of the Piedmont, Inc. He served on the American National Bank & Trust Company Board of Directors until age 75. Dan also taught evening accounting courses and served on the Danville Community College Accounting Advisory Committee. Dan coached Danville Little League Baseball and served as treasurer of the league for 11 years. He served the Boy Scouts as Scoutmaster, was a private pilot, and enjoyed playing golf. He had a passion for building airplanes, restoring antique and classic aircraft, flying planes, and watching Virginia Tech sports. Also, he loved his dogs and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a Federal Aviation Administration Certified Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanic. He was a former member of the Ringgold Jaycees and a former member of the Lion’s Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross. Dan was a former member of Danville Golf Club and served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany where he served on the vestry, was Junior Warden, served as an usher, and worked on various committees. He was previously a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and as treasurer for many years. Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sally; his son, Michael Dan Davis and his wife Lora Carden Davis of Danville; his daughter, Katherine Davis McDaniel and her husband Randall Joseph McDaniel of Danville; and his grandson, who was his pride and joy, Jacob Lawrence McDaniel of Danville. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby I. Davis and wife Becky; his sister, Nancy Davis Karnes and husband, Danny; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park, Sunday, November 28, at 2:00 pm with The Reverend Jon R. Anderson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Danville Area Humane Society.
