Clarence O. “Hump” Newton, 89, of Ringgold, VA died Thursday, May 11, 2017 after several months of declining health. He was born in Nelson, VA on March 4, 1928 to Hammett and Jeannetta Wiles Newton. In addition to his loving and devoted wife Wilma T. Newton, he is survived by one brother Dennis Newton and one sister, Marjorie Heath and husband Aubrey, sisters-in-law Laura Newton, Dalie Newton and brother-in-law Joe Crute and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three brothers; Charlie, James and Garland Newton and three sisters; Mary Sue Slaughter Cole, Kathlene Crute and Magruda Newton, sisters-in-law; Margaret M. Newton, and Linda Newton and brother-in-law, Richard Slaughter. Known by family and friends as “Hump”, he was a veteran of World War II and, up until the sale of the company in 1984, owned and operated American Home Construction Co. with his brother Charlie. An aficionada of craftsmanship, Hump was an accomplished carpenter himself and has numerous beautiful structures to his credit including his own home. He will always be remembered for his love of family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. from Ringgold Baptist Church with Reverend Duane Caldwell and Reverend Carl Burger presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Military Honors will be presented by the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Ringgold Baptist Church on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 7 to 9 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 1601 Countryside Drive, Ringgold. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Ringgold Baptist Church Building Fund, 4620 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586; Ringgold Volunteer Fire Dept., 3880 Tom Fork Road, Ringgold, VA 24586 or to area Humane Societies.
