Charlie Allen Poteat passed away February 24, 2024. Charlie was born December 31, 1933, in Caswell County, NC, to the late Nettie C. Poteat and late Steve Poteat. He was married to Janice Harrelson Poteat who predeceases him. He lived all his life in the Providence community.
He graduated from Cobb Memorial High School in 1953 and served in the U.S. Army for 22 months, stationed in SC, Washington state and Alaska. Charlie was retired from the Providence Volunteer Fire Dept. of which he was a founding member.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years and retired from #5 Electric Shop. He was of the Baptist faith and was a lifetime member of Providence Baptist Church where he served in several capacities, including deacon, over the years.
Along with his wife Janice Harrelson Poteat, Charlie is predeceased by his brother Bobby Poteat, sister-in-law Margaret Poteat, brother Dewey Poteat and wife Faye. Charlie is survived by his daughter Stacey P. Clayton of Providence and husband, Danny; brothers Reuben Poteat (Janice B), Tony Poteat (Vickie), brother-in-law Mark Harrelson and sister-in-law Judy Lawson. He also survives two grandchildren, Leah Neighbors, Joshua Clayton, three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held Friday March 1, 2024, 2:00pm at Providence Baptist Church with Pastor Mitch Cifers officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 to 2:00pm at the church. Interment will follow the funeral service at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
