Charles Henry “Charlie” Gourley, Jr, age 90, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2016 in the Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born in Durham, NC on October 29, 1925 a son of the late Charles H. Gourley and Bea Shorter Gourley. Charlie was predeceased by his wife Frances Haymes Gourley in 2006. He was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church, a life member of D. A. V. Archer T. Gammon Chapter 119, and the USS Cabot Association. Charlie served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and received a number of Ribbons including the Pacific Theater with 9 Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal American Theatre and Presidential Unit Citation. He owned and operated, with his partner, the late Paul Cassada, the Drive In Supernette (later the Quick Service Market) on Piney Forest Road for 30 years. He later worked for several car dealerships until his retirement. He is survived by two sons, C. Kent Gourley (Karen) of Danville, John A. Gourley of Keeling, VA; a daughter, Karen G. Clayton of Danville; nine grandchildren, Brian Gourley (Cylest), Heather Gourley, Chris Clayton (Katina), Josh Clayton, Stephanie C. Anderson and (Chad), Laura G. Schoonover (Brandon), Angela G. Daughty (Paul), Michael Gourley and Jessica Gourley; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Frances Brann and Catherine Willis. Graveside services will be held in Highland Burial Park at 2 pm on Monday, October 3, 2016 with the Reverend Charles Swanson officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm.
