Carolyn Grinstead Garrett, 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, surrounded by her family. She had been in declining health for the past few months. She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on December 14, 1940, the only child to the late Carl Parker (Jack) and Charlene Davis Grinstead. Her parents moved to Danville shortly after her birth. She was educated in the Danville Public School System, graduating from George Washington High School. She graduated from Longwood College in 1962. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Wright Lanier Garrett. She is also survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Helms Goins (Van) of Danville, Virginia and Laura Garrett Marshburn (Brad) of Raleigh, North Carolina. Her granddaughters, Brittney Paige, Chelsea Alexis and Madison Elizabeth Herren, all of Danville and her grandsons, Garrett Thomas and Benjamin Davis Marshburn of Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Beverley Lanier Garrett. Carolyn taught in many elementary schools during her 30 years with the Danville Public School System until her retirement in 2002. She deeply loved her family and enjoyed all the special moments with her grandchildren. She loved the beach, reading her books and was an avid bridge player. She played in the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club and was a member of The Wednesday Club. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. The family will have a visitation at noon on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. at the church with the Reverend Bart Fletcher officiating. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence at 121 Acorn Lane.
