Carolyn Poteat Fortner, 89, died Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Born June 27, 1935, in Gaston County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Florence Poteat. She spent most of her life in Danville where she graduated from George Washington High School. Upon graduation, she started working for Lorillard Tobacco Company where she was a dedicated employee in the payroll department for over 30 years.

On September 1, 1956, she married Jack Sager Fortner. They were married for 36 years before his passing on August 28, 1992.

Survivors include one daughter, Ava Gould and her husband, Pat; four grandchildren, Miranda Baines, Kathleen Baines, Timothy Baines, and Rachel Rimel as well two great-grandchildren, Elliana and Alden Rimel. Carolyn is also survived by two sisters, Helen Cousins and Sarah Scott, and one brother, Harold Poteat. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was predeceased by two brothers, Clayton and Raymond Poteat.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 31st, 2024, at Highland Burial Park at 10:00 AM with the Reverend Joe Northen officiating. The family requests that donations be made to Danville Area Humane Society or God’s Storehouse.
