Bettie Carter

Bettie Cook Carter, 85, of 175 Hawthorne Drive, died Monday, July 28, 2014 at Duke University Hospital. Born November 19, 1928, she was the daughter of Cennie Hall Cook and Clifton Dennis Cook. She was married in 1950 to Everett Emory Carter, Jr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and graduated from George Washington High School and Averett College. She resided her whole life in Danville. She was a past member of The Wednesday Club and the Gabriella Garden Club. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Carter Lunsford and her husband, Hunter Lee Lunsford, III; two grandchildren, Hunter Lee Lunsford, IV and his wife Kristen and Carter Lunsford Stocks and her husband, Chad; and four great grandchildren, Hunter Lee Lunsford, V, James Penn Lunsford, Reagan Elizabeth Stocks, and Baylor Troy Stocks. She is also survived by a brother, Clifton D. Cook, Jr. and a sister, Mary C. Pegram. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Cook Wilkerson. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 1, 2014, at Mountain View Cemetery with the Reverend Charles Wickham officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or to a charity of your choice.
