Benjamin Whitfield Sublett, a long time resident of Birmingham, Alabama and a retired insurance manager died February 3, 2013 at his home in Birmingham. He was born on April 17, 1931 in Danville, Virginia and was the son of Freya Cramer Sublett and Henry Lee Sublett, Sr. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his brother, the late Dr. Henry Lee Sublett, Jr. He graduated from George Washington High School in Danville and joined the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War. He was part of the group of Naval personnel with the responsibility for emergency evacuation of Americans in Europe and the Mediterranean area should the need arise. He also handled top secret material including atomic top secret for the area just mentioned. Afterward, he became a member of the American Legion. After discharge Mr. Sublett attended the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Virginia graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. Afterward, he joined the Insurance Company of North America for a 32 years career retiring in 1989 and making his home in Alabama. He was a charter member of SPEBSQSA in Danville and enjoyed concentrating o family lines from pre-revolution to present times. In addition, Mr. Sublett was interested in supporting the handicapped serving as president of the Community Advocates for Developmentally Disabled and as a life member of The ARC of Jefferson County. He was vice president of Delta Signa Pi, a professional business fraternity and a member of The Jefferson Literary Society. He also belonged to Theta Chi Social Fraternity. Surviving are his wife, Joan Whitehead Sublett, two sons: Chandler Cramer Sublett and Michael Brooks Sublett and one grandson: Aaron Benjamin Sublett. Visitation in Birmingham will be at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a reception during the visitation and in Danville, Virginia at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street a visitation will be Friday, February 8, 2013 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM on Friday in Danville at Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Susan Hannah, Pastor at Whitmell United Methodist Church and Saint John's United Methodist Church officiating. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Sublett family. The family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Inc., 244 Goodwin Crest Drive, Homewood, Alabama in lieu of flowers
