It is profound sadness that her family announces the passing of Barbara Ann Bynum Dyer on March 23, 2013. Barbara was born June 2, 1934 in Centerville, Mississippi to the late William Byrd and Irlene Bond Bynum. She spent her early childhood in Norwood, and then Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is survived by her two sons, Gus Walker Dyer III and William Bynum Dyer, and her daughter Bond Dyer Mathews, and her husband Pete, and their children Reilly and Parker. In addition she is survived. In addition she is survived by her brother Bill Bynum and his wife Beryl, her sister-in-law Ellen Dyer Davis, 10 nieces and nephews and their families. Barbara attended Randolph-Macon Women's College where she met her roommate and lifelong friend Sarah Aaron Mathis. It was through Sarah, a Danville native, that she met her future husband Gus Walker Dyer, Jr. They were wed on February 16th, 1957. He pre-deceased her on January 25th, 1993 Barbara was for many years a teacher in the Danville Public Schools. In addition to her professional career, she also was active with Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, The Danville Garden Club, The United Way, The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, The Danville Golf Club and the Wednesday Club. Her children would like to thank her many close friends who provided her with love and compassion in her final years, but particularly Ellen Davis, Dot Adams, Henrietta Abercrombie and Margaret Milam. They would also like to thank the staff at Roman Eagle Memorial Home and a very special thank you to her caregiver and friend Audrey Parker. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Barry Foster officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will be at the residence 329 Hawthorne Drive. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Dyer family.
