Audrey Lou Roach Cahill, born April 24, 1929, rose to the waiting arms of her lord and savior, Jesus Christ on Nov. 3, 2023. She passed, exhausted from a long illness, at home in the loving care of her children.
Audrey was born in Greensboro, NC, the daughter of A. B. Roach and Macey Owens Roach. She married her love, through thick and thin, Bill Cahill, on August 28, 1949. She was predeceased by her Parents, Husband, W. S. (Bill) Cahill, Jr., and Half Sister, Frances Bier. She leaves behind three loving children Marcia Cahill Dalton (Tom), William Thomas Cahill (Tammy Albright-Coreil), Louis Saunders Cahill (Kathy) Daughter-in-love, Janice Ricketts Cahill as well as two grandchildren Anne Kathryn Dalton and Bryan Thomas Dalton. She also leaves behind her lifelong friend, Mary Anne Hodge.
Although born at the start of the Great Depression, her memories were always bright and colorful. She told stories of roller skating on West Main St at a time when friends and neighbors shared food, tools, toys and the love for each other. As a teenager, her lovely voice developed and she traveled as the female singer for a popular Swing Band. She carried this voice into radio advertisements for WBTM and enjoyed serving the Lord as a member of the Choir at West End Christian Church.
As a graduate of Averett College, she found long-term employment with Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She worked as Executive Assistant to the Director of DRHA for almost 20 years. She took great pride in her work and the many projects taken on by DRHA to create better housing for the citizens of Danville, Va.
Audrey was a member of the Westover Hills Garden Club, winning numerous Blue Ribbons for floral arrangements. She and her mother not only styled arrangements in the conventional to the avant-garde but also raised their flowers in beautiful gardens around the home. Some of the Iris still survive. This talent of art and love of flowers led her to many years of breathtaking painting on fine porcelain china. For several decades, she not only painted but taught classes and even served as the President of the North Carolina China Painters Guild.
Her talents were not limited to voice and art. She was an avid golfer and won numerous Club Championships at both Glen Oak Country Club and Tuscarora Country Club. She played on a traveling circuit, The Dixie Six, a women’s division of local Clubs. On one occasion, she won the City Championship by such a margin she requested the local paper not publish her score.
Above all else Audrey Cahill was a true friend to many, a loving mother and grandmother, a faithful wife, a child who loved and respected the sacrifice of her parents, she loved and served the Lord through her dying breath. May we all rejoice.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 7, 2023, from 12:00-2:00PM, with a funeral service following at Townes Funeral Home on West Main St. in Danville and the interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to make donations to the church or charity of your choice.
